As you like it
research and production
2024 - 2025
As you like it is a research project that is currently in development to become a performance. It is based on research how Western perspectives on the female body, nudity, and sexuality have influenced Japanese ideals—particularly during the early Meiji era and the (post-)World War II period. Current striptease theatre in Japan was a key element in the research during TOKAS Research Residency in Japan. In this work, costume and scenography serve as extensions of the body and instruments of connection, dissolving the boundary between performer and spectator. They highlight how context shapes perception. At its core is the movement of the gaze: creating borders, forming connections, and inviting ambiguous interpretations of intention and presence. By playing with the tension between fantasy and action, the piece raises questions around sexualization and sexual consent.
As you like it and Grazing (working title) are two projects that in the research phase were running parallel and thereby actively exchanged knowledge and experiences.
